Case Study Overview

Problem

The aim was to determine which, out of many environmental and flow variables, impacted others. Further analysis was done to identify which had a causal impact on storm water quality.

Solution

Parramatta City Council had collected data from sensors in water catchment areas to determine influences on water runoff quality.

Thirty variables (e.g precipitation, temperature, soil moisture, flow measures and more) were analysed by the causal engine with the expectation of finding some known relationships and some not.

Successful Outcome

The Council’s “expected” data relationships were mostly not confirmed by the data (meaning, they did not have strong cause-effect relationship coefficients).

One causal driver was identified by the our analysis.  This single driver was shown to strongly and adversely impact water quality. This was unexpected information not know before.
